Barrie's Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre is caring for far more patients than it was designed and funded to handle, and its CEO is warning that the region needs new healthcare capacity to keep up.

In a public letter addressed to the community, RVH President and CEO Gail Hunt acknowledged that many patients and families are waiting longer than they should for care, and said the hospital's emergency department alone now sees more than 96,000 visits each year — well beyond the roughly 67,500 visits it was built to accommodate.

"We know that many patients and families are waiting longer than they should," Hunt wrote in the letter, posted on the hospital's website on Oct. 21.

Hunt described emergency departments that are crowded and hospital beds that are full. When medical imaging, pharmacy, laboratory and support services are stretched, she wrote, patients may wait longer for care, tests, results, treatment or a bed.

A region growing faster than its hospital

The letter points to rapid population growth, an aging population and increasingly complex healthcare needs across Simcoe Muskoka as the forces driving demand beyond what RVH can comfortably absorb. According to a letter from RVH President and CEO Gail Hunt, the volume increases also create financial pressures as the hospital works to meet growing demand with the resources available to it.

Despite those pressures, Hunt wrote that patient safety and quality of care remain the hospital's highest priorities. She said teams are working daily to improve patient flow, reduce wait times where possible, and ensure patients receive care when they need it.

Hunt praised the hospital's staff, physicians, volunteers and learners, saying they continue to go above and beyond whether working at the bedside, supporting diagnostic services, coordinating care across the region, or keeping operations running behind the scenes.

Push for investment

Looking ahead, Hunt said it is clear the region needs additional healthcare capacity and infrastructure. RVH is working with government, healthcare partners and the community to secure the investments required to expand services, create more space for patient care, and build the health centre the growing population will need in the years ahead, the letter states.

"Our commitment is simple: we will continue doing everything we can to provide excellent care today while working relentlessly to build the hospital our region needs for tomorrow," Hunt wrote.

Hunt also thanked the community for its patience, understanding and support, noting that residents have played an important role in helping RVH grow over the years. She said that partnership will remain essential as the hospital works to build a stronger future for healthcare in Simcoe Muskoka.
